Why Keeping It Real Is the Key to Being an Effective Counsellor

As a counsellor, beginning your training can be like navigating a maze. You are bombarded with information and feel the pressure to meet high professional standards. One challenge many face is the belief that personal lives should remain completely private. This misconception can stifle genuine connection with clients.

When I started my training, I was anxious about how to respond if a client asked about my weekend. I thought I needed to maintain a strict professional barrier, assuming that any glimpse of my personal life could undermine my credibility. However, I soon learned that sharing parts of my real self can be incredibly beneficial—not just for me, but also for my clients.

The Journey to Authenticity

Training in counselling often emphasises keeping personal experiences separate from professional duties. This can lead to fear, making new counsellors hesitant to share anything personal for fear of being perceived as unprofessional. However, over time I have discovered that authenticity is essential for effective counselling.

Authenticity fosters trust and eases discomfort. In my practice, clients routinely share deep, personal stories. They deserve a setting that feels genuine, not scripted. When I began to bring my authentic self into therapy sessions, I noticed remarkable changes. Clients became more engaged, sharing more openly about their struggles. They saw me not merely as a professional but as a person, creating a more dynamic and interactive environment.

Embracing Personal Stories

The ability to share personal stories is a powerful asset for counsellors. We often hear that when we share our own stories, we inspire others. In counselling, this is particularly true. While life can bring painful moments, these experiences can also become transformative lessons.

For instance, my path to becoming a counsellor was significantly shaped by the loss of my baby boy. This loss propelled me into the counselling field, giving me a deeper understanding of grief and healing. Having experienced the profound benefit of empathetic listening, I cherish the opportunity to provide that support for others.

By sharing elements of my journey, such as my experience with bereavement, I connect with clients facing similar challenges. This selective sharing can empower my clients, as they recognise that they are not alone in their struggles. It becomes a tool for guidance, facilitating their healing journey.

Balancing Professionalism with Personal Connection

While authenticity enriches the therapeutic relationship, it’s equally important to maintain professionalism. Finding this balance requires careful thought, always keeping the focus on the client. They seek our expertise, and it is our duty to provide them a safe and respectful environment.

I make it a practice to share selectively. I consider the potential impact of my experiences on my clients and ensure that sharing adds value. This balance is essential; my personal experiences should never eclipse their needs.

Vital boundaries exist around the context and relevance of sharing personal stories. Thoughtful storytelling can genuinely connect us without compromising our roles as facilitators of healing.

The Importance of Self-Care

In the helping professions, self-care can easily slip down the list of priorities. The intensity of clients' emotions can affect our well-being. However, embracing authenticity in our self-care processes can significantly enhance our emotional health.

For example, I run three times a week and listen to podcasts or audiobooks during my workouts. This practice keeps me grounded and connected to my purpose. By actively engaging in self-care, I can recharge and remain fully present for my clients.

Modelling self-care is beneficial not only for us but also for our clients. It emphasises the importance of well-being in their lives and promotes healthy habits they can integrate into their routines.

Embracing Authenticity in Practice

The shift from hiding my true self to embracing authenticity has reshaped my experience as a counsellor. By sharing pertinent elements of my personal story, I gain a deeper trust and connection with my clients.

Being an effective counsellor means allowing glimpses of our true selves without compromising professionalism. By being honest, non-judgmental, and discreet while incorporating our authentic experiences, we can cultivate a supportive space that creates real transformation.
